McCALLA, Ala. - UAB's women's golf team takes to the links Monday and Tuesday in the Buffalo Rock Southern Shootout hosted by cross town rival Birmingham-Southern. It is the second tournament of the Blazers' spring season, which resulted in both team and individual titles in their first competition two weeks ago.
Junior Janey Deimling shot rounds of 78 and 75 on Feb. 11 to capture individual medalist honors and lead UAB to a team victory in the Miss Louis Season Opener at Southern Miss. The win was Deimling's first career tournament victory and the first team win for UAB since winning BSC's Southern Shootout in the invitational's inaugural offering in 2002.
In addition to Deimling's career-best finish, sophomore Martha Hudson turned in her top career performance in the Miss Louis tournament, shooting back-to-back 77s to finish second in the individual field. UAB's Brooke Mangan and Liz Schweihs both had top-10 finishes in the tournament as well.
"It was a small field, but a good, gradual start for our players," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "We were able to establish some confidence heading into the spring."
The 36-hole Southern Shootout will be played at Bent Brook Golf Course in McCalla, Ala., just southwest of Birmingham. The par-72 course will play just over 5,900-yards. UAB won the tournament in 2002 and finished second in 2003, but those editions of the tournament were played at Greystone Golf Club. The Blazers did not compete in the same tournament last year. This year's field includes Berry (Ga.), Birmingham-Southern, Gardner-Webb, Georgetown, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Lipscomb, New Orleans, Samford, South Alabama, Tennessee Tech, Troy, Western Kentucky and the Blazers.
"I think if we play well we can win it," Wilcox said. "If we play the way we did in the fall, we certainly should be in contention. The scores will probably be high because of the rain Sunday and the course is wet, but if Brooke (Mangan) and Liz (Schweihs) play better than they did in Hattiesburg, which I fully expect them to, Janey (Deimling) is her normal consistent self and Martha (Hudson) can fight through a little shoulder pain that is nagging her, we should be alright."
After this week's local play, UAB will travel to Tampa, Fla., to compete in USF's Waterfele Invitational March 14-15.
