BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball team will look to extend a four-game winning streak when it hosts Ball State for three games this weekend at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers (4-0) are fresh off an impressive victory over Alabama on Thursday night while the Cardinals (1-1) split two games with Middle Tennessee State last weekend before having the series finale rained out. First pitch in Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. with UAB senior righthander Adam Price (1-0, 0.00 ERA) taking the mound against Ball State's Joe Ness (1-0, 7.20 ERA). Fans can follow the action online all weekend long with Gametracker on www.uabsports.com.
Saturday's game begins at 2 p.m. as Blazer senior Jeff Brown (1-0, 9.00 ERA) goes against Ben Snyder ((0-1, 12.46 ERA) and Sunday's series finale will pit UAB's Cole Helms (1-0, 0.00 ERA) against the Cardinals' Ryan DeGeeter (0-0, 0.00 ERA) at 1 p.m.
In their only other meetings on the diamond, the Blazers swept a three-game series from Ball State early in the 2003 season.
After sweeping its season-opening series against Central Michigan, UAB continued to roll with a 7-1 win over the Crimson Tide of Alabama on Thursday in Birmingham. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed because of rain after an inning and a half of play. When the teams returned to the field on Thursday, the Blazers took advantage of strong pitching, timely hitting and defensive miscues by Alabama to knock off the Tide for the first time since the 2001 season. UAB starter Randy Mills was excellent in his debut as a Blazer, going 4.2 innings and allowing just one run while striking out five. Ryan Huffman and Eric Roberts then combined to pitch the final 4.1 innings without allowing a run. Zac Ward led UAB offensively with two hits and two RBIs, while Cole Helms hit his first home run of the season.
Freshman centerfielder Clint Toomey leads the Blazers with a .571 batting average on the early season while J.R. Bond and Ryan Metcalf are also above .400. Helms leads the way with five runs batted in so far in four games.
