BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB track and field team travels back to Houston on Friday and Saturday for the Conference USA Championships, hosted at the University of Houston. This marks the second time this season that the Blazers will compete at the Bill Yeoman Field House, as they competed at the Cougar Opener in their first meet of the season.
UAB will try to repeat the performance it had at the Cougar Opener. The Blazers had four first place finishes and set three school records, with freshman Stacey Adewakun setting a new record in the 55 meters, sophomore Genoah Collins setting a record in the 800 meters and sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus setting a record in the 3000 meters. Since then, both Collins and Ambrus have broken their own records set in Houston.
In 2004 UAB finished eighth out of 13, which was the Blazers' highest finish in four years. UAB scored 31 points, a 16 point improvement from 2003, when they fielded a team of only three members. TCU finished first in the meet with 125 points, followed by South Florida, with 97.5 points and two-time defending champion Houston in third with 92 points. Tulane finished fourth, followed by Marquette, Charlotte, DePaul, the Blazers, ECU, Louisville, Cincinnati, Southern Miss and Memphis.
The meet will start at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with the pentathlon and conclude with the distance medley relay at 9:40 p.m. On Saturday the meet will start at 11 a.m. with the shot put and conclude at 4:35 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay. Awards will be presented at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
