BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's basketball team has clinched a berth in the 2005 Pepsi C-USA Women's Basketball Tournament to be held March 3-6, in Charlotte, N.C.
The tournament is being hosted by Charlotte and will be played at Dale F. Halton Arena. UAB head coach Audra Smith is taking the Blazers to the Conference USA Tournament in her first year with the team.
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to go and compete in the Conference USA Tournament," said Smith. "I'm proud of the players and how they've fought throughout the conference season. We're going into the tournament with high hopes. We're going in to play our best and play as hard as we can play. We will take each game one at a time and even one half at a time. The players are anxious to start preparing for the excitement surrounding the tournament, but first, we have to get ready to face USF on Saturday."
The Blazers (7-19, 4-9) are currently tied for 10th in the league with Cincinnati, which UAB beat earlier this season. The top 12 teams qualify for the tournament. It will mark the 14th time in 15 years the Blazers have participated in the conference tournament. UAB was the No. 11 seed in the 2004 Conference USA Tournament and fell to Memphis, 64-54, in the opening round.
The Blazers and USF finish the regular season on Saturday when UAB travels to Tampa, Fla. to take on the Bulls at 2 p.m. CT.
