BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB track and field team begins its indoor season at the Clemson Opener in Clemson, S.C., on Friday and Saturday. The Blazers are looking to improve upon a successful 2005 season that saw UAB qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships in seven events.
"The good thing about a December meet is that it gives track athletes a chance to see where they are," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "These athletes have been training hard since August without competing and this is a light at the end of the tunnel. This a good test to see where the girls are and what we need to do to get ready for the season and, ultimately, for Conference USA."
The Blazers turned in their best finish since 1996 when they took third at the 2005 Conference USA Indoor Championships. UAB scored 77 points and improved tremendously on the previous year's eighth-place finish. The Blazers had six All-Conference USA performers as well.
Competition begins Friday at 4 p.m. (CT). Results can be found on www.clemsontigers.com.
