BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Georgia State on Tuesday evening at Bartow Arena. With the loss, the Blazers fall to 14-8 overall, while the Lady Panthers improve to 10-14 on the season. Five players in the match recorded double-doubles and UAB loses just its second non-conference tilt of the year.
Ivana Bozic led the Blazers with 17 kills and Nicole Bowland's 19 kills were a match-high. Casey Dent hit a match-best .421 with 11 kills and Isabel Oquendo (13 kills, 13 digs) and Nevena Stefanov (47 assists, 15 digs) each notched double-doubles. Stefanov also recorded her 1,000th assist of the season in game number two. Georgia State was led by Ana Paula Ferreira (13 kills, 19 digs) and Alex Blenche (21 kills, 10 digs).
"Georgia State played hard and we were unable to put many points together back-to-back," said UAB co-interim head coach Nikola Petrovic. "We're looking forward to bouncing back against Tulane and UTEP this weekend."
The Blazers slowly built a solid lead in the first game, doubling up the Lady Panthers by a score of 14-7 in the early going and keeping that pace for an 18-11 advantage when Georgia State used its first timeout. Solid offensive play from Dent and Bozic kept UAB rolling as the Blazers cruised to a 30-23 win.
After Georgia State pulled even with a 30-22 victory in the second game, the Panthers put themselves in the driver's seat with another 30-25 win in game three.
The teams traded points back-and-forth, with four ties in the fourth game's first 20 points. After six more ties, the Panthers grabbed a 21-19 lead with a block and service ace from Jordan Thomas. But a Bozic kill, followed by duo block from Cooper and Bozic again knotted things at 21. Trailing by a point at 27-26, UAB got a kill from Oquendo, then took the lead on the next point. But two straight Panther points gave Georgia State a match point at 29-28. The Panthers finished off the contest with a kill.
The Blazers return to Conference USA action Friday when they host Tulane at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
