Blazers Blanked At Memphis, 3-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The UAB volleyball team dropped its first match of the weekend to Memphis, 3-0 on Friday evening at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. With the loss, the Blazers fall to 1-2 in Conference USA play and 10-3 overall. The Tigers improve to 11-7 overall and remain unbeaten in league play at 3-0.
Freshmen Ivana Bozic and Aleksandra Vujovic led UAB with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Sophomore Shaniquwa Cooper led the Blazers with five total blocks. Memphis' Ashley Liford and Nancy Nellans combined for 24 kills in the match.
Both teams struggled somewhat in the opening game, with UAB hitting just .061 compared to the Tigers' .188. But Memphis was able to capitalize on the Blazers' mistakes, taking game one by a score of 30-22.
After the Tigers captured game two by the same score, they were able to put away the match with another convincing, 30-24 win in the third and final contest. Over the course of the match, Memphis put up better numbers than UAB in nearly every statistical category, including kills, hitting percentage, assists, service aces, digs and blocks.
The Blazers and Tigers will square off against each other again on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
