BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team fell to SMU Friday night, 4-0, in Dallas, Texas. The Blazers fall to 8-8-1 on the year and 4-3-1 in Conference USA. SMU improves to 13-4-1 and 7-1 in the conference.
"From box to box we are as good as any team in the conference," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We have to sort out some details in the back and have a more assertive finishing mentality. SMU had a very high finishing percentage tonight and played well inside the box on both ends."
The Blazers had a golden scoring opportunity to start the match but sophomore Sally Palmer's shot hit the cross bar. SMU took the early lead in the seventh minute when Olivia O'Rear scored her third goal of the season.
Palmer looked to tie the match in the eight minute but her shot was wide. Sophomore Autumn Browning then gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the 20th minute. The goal was her first of two in the match.
SMU took a 2-0 lead into the half but UAB quickly applied pressure. Freshman Nasra Abdullah had a great scoring chance in the 47th minute but the shot was saved by the goalkeeper.
In the 50th minute, sophomore Krystal Bailey scored her only goal of the night to make it 3-0 Mustangs. Kristen Moran was credited on the assist. UAB would respond with two scoring opportunities in the 62nd minute but could not find the net. SMU scored its final goal of the night in the 63rd minute and held on for the victory.
UAB took 11 shots in the match and was led by Palmer, who had four shots. Junior goalkeeper Katie Forbis has five saves.
UAB travels to Tulsa Sunday and face the Golden Hurricane. The match is schedule for a 1 p.m. CT and will be played at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
