BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's golf squad hits the links Saturday and Sunday at the 2005 University of Kentucky Wildcat Fall Invitational in its second tournament of the young season. Kim Wilcox's club will join 15 other teams, including Conference USA rivals East Carolina, Memphis and Southern Miss, in the field.
"This is a solid field and a beautiful, but challenging course," Wilcox said. "The front nine is pretty straight forward, but the back nine is tricky. It will pose a challenge to us in placing the ball. But it's challenges like this that make us a better golf team."
The 54-hole tournament is being played at UK's University Club Big Blue Course in Lexington, Ky. It is a par-72, 6,150-yard course. Teams will play 36 holes Saturday and 18 on Sunday.
The field includes the host Wildcats, defending tournament champion Mississippi State and Florida from the SEC. The Gators ended the 2004-05 season ranked No. 13 in the National Golf Coaches Association's final poll. Other participants are Ball State, Birmingham-Southern, Eastern Kentucky, Miami of Ohio, Murray State, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro and Richmond. Mississippi State won last year's Wildcat Fall Invitational with team totals of 302-299-297.
The Blazers opened their 2005-06 campaign two weeks ago with a 12th place finish of 16 teams at the University of Alabama's Ann Rhoads Invitational. Junior Martha Hudson, who had been medically cleared to play just days before the tournament, shot a personal record for 54 holes with rounds of 78-76-79 to claim top honors for UAB. Hudson, who had off-season shoulder surgery, was tied for 26th overall in the field. Her second round 76 was also a career low.
In addition to Hudson, Wilcox will call upon senior Janey Deimling, junior Lois Jones, sophomore Ashlee Claydon and freshman Christina Wentworth to compete for UAB. It is the same starting five from the season's first tournament, which saw the Blazers card team scores of 328-316-325. Deimling is a returning All-Conference USA performer for the Blazers.
