CARBONDALE, Ill. ----- The UAB track and field team continued to perform well at the Saluki Booster Invtational, hosted by Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. The Blazers had five first-place finishes and set another school record on Friday and Saturday.
"We had another great meet today," said Blazers' head coach Ray Stanfield. "We had a lot of girls run very well for us. It was a very good meet overall. We were able to bring everyone to this meet, and we were able to get some of the freshman a chance to compete. I was really pleased with the effort and by what I saw. We really built off of what we did last week and I think we ran even better this week."
Senior Theresa Smith won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.14 and Judy Shepherd took second, as the Blazers had five athletes qualify for the finals in that event. Sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus won the mile with a time of 5:01.86 and sophomore Genoah Collins finished third in her first collegiate mile race. Sophomore Orianna Carter won the 55-meter dash, posting a 7.03 time and sophomore Stephanie McCauley had a personal-best 7.10 in the event.
Freshman Stacey Adewakun took first in the 200-meter sprint, running a personal-best 25.12 and McCauley finished fourth in the event with a 25.50 time. Freshman Elizabeth Hilligoss was second in the 3000-meter run and sophomore Ryanne Fortney and freshman Whitney Mays finished in fourth and sixth place respectively. The 4x400 meter relay team of freshmen Shauntel Jennings, Collins, senior Elace Minnifield and freshman Tara Colvin finished second with a school record time of 3:51.18.
Sophomore Erin Harris took first place in the triple jump on Friday, with a final jump of 11.99m. Shepherd had the third best jump, which was a personal best 11.91m and Penny Shields was sixth with a jump of 11.79m, which was also a personal record. Harris also took second in the long jump and Shepherd, Shields, freshman Tracy Rowan and senior Adrienne Duke finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the high jump.
"Erin Harris won the triple jump on her final attempt," said UAB assistant coach Andy Eggerth. "She came back on her last jump with some technical improvement and a lot of intensity. All six of her jumps were better than her previous personal best."
