FORT WORTH, Texas - UAB posted eight runs in the second inning, four runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth en route to a 20-10 victory over TCU in Conference USA baseball action Saturday evening at Lupton Stadium.
Jacob Legg (3-2) picked up the win for UAB (23-23, 9-13 C-USA), who out hit TCU 22-13 for the game, after coming on in relief of Blazer starter Adam Price in the bottom of the second inning. Legg worked seven shut-out winnings and allowed only three hits. He walked one and struck out four.
Price pitched an inning and gave up eight runs, six of which were earned, on seven hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Horned Frog starter Ryan Weems (4-2) took the loss for TCU (29-17, 15-7 C-USA) after pitching one and two-thirds innings and allowing 10 runs on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out one.
The loss snapped a four-game C-USA home winning streak for the Horned Frogs.
UAB got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer to right field by designated hitter Nathan McCorkle.
TCU answered with six runs in the bottom of the first after batting around. Left fielder Chad Huffman singled through the left side, allowing second baseman Ramon Moses to score the Horned Frogs' first run of the inning. Designated hitter Bo Cogbill later reached first on an fielding error by Blazer second baseman Seth Rollin, allowing third baseman Shelby Ford to score from third. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Price hit center fielder Austin Adams, bringing in Huffman from third base. Right fielder J.J. Estrada followed with a single through the left side, scoring Cogbill and shortstop German Duran. Blazer left fielder Jeremy Moran overran Estrada's hit on the play, also allowing Adams to score. TCU led 6-2.
UAB regained the lead after batting around and posting an eight-run second inning. Catcher Eugene Rodriguez doubled to right field, allowing third baseman Zac Ward, center fielder Levi Patmon and shortstop Josh Miljavac to score the Blazers' first runs of the inning. First baseman Daniel Hill followed with a double to left field, bringing in Rodriguez. McCorkle then collected his third RBI of the contest when he singled up the middle, scoring Hill. Moran later singled through the right side, scoring McCorkle. Rollin followed with a double to left field, bringing in Moran. Ward then singled to right field, scoring Rollin. UAB led 10-6.
The Blazers tied a school record with nine hits in the second inning.
TCU got two runs in the bottom of the second. First baseman Chris Neuman singled to center field, allowing Ford to score the Horned Frogs' first run of the inning. Cogbill followed with a single to left field, scoring Huffman.
The Blazers answered with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Rollin singled down the right field line, allowing right fielder Cole Helms to score UAB's first run of the inning. Ward followed with a doubled down the left field line, bringing in Rollin. Later in the inning, Miljavac's sacrifice bunt brought in Ward from third base. Rodriguez then collected his fourth RBI of the contest when he singled to right field, scoring Patmon. UAB led 14-8.
UAB later posted a five-run sixth inning. Miljavac's infield single allowed Rollin to score the Blazers' first run of the inning. Hill later got his fourth RBI of the contest when he doubled to left field, scoring Patmon and Miljavac. McCorkle then got his fifth RBI of the game when he singled up the middle, scoring Rodriguez and Hill. UAB led 19-8.
The Blazers added a run in the top of the eighth inning when Drew Connell, who was pinch hitting for Hill, reached first base on a throwing error by Duran, allowing Miljavac to score from third base.
TCU posted two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Cogbill hit a two-run homer to left field.
McCorkle went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and tied a career high with five RBI, Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, Hill went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, Miljavac was 2-for-5 with a career-high three runs scored and two RBI, Ward went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, Rollin was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI and Patmon went 4-for-6 with three runs scored to lead the Blazers.
UAB's 20 runs was the most scored by a Blazer team since the 2000 season and the most scored by a Blazer squad in C-USA play since 1998.
The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. The series is tied at a game apiece as TCU won the Friday game 5-4
