Blazers Shut Out By Memphis 9-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Jarrett Grube tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout in helping lead Memphis to a 9-0 victory over UAB in Conference USA baseball action Friday evening at Nat Buring Stadium.
Memphis (15-12, 4-6 C-USA) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Right fielder Jordan Hart led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field. Later in the inning with two outs, catcher Kurt Welch doubled to right center field, scoring shortstop Brent Dlugach. Center fielder Josh Payne followed with a single to right field, scoring Welch. Designated hitter Adam Amar then hit a two-run homer to right field.
The Tigers took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Dlugach scored Memphis' first run of the inning on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Welch scored on Amar's sacrifice fly to right field.
Memphis got a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when with the bases loaded, Blazer reliever Ryan Huffman walked Dlugach, bringing in second baseman Michael Lewis from third base. The Tigers led 8-0.
The Tigers took a 9-0 advantage in the bottom of the eighth inning on a solo home run to left center field by Dlugach.
Grube (6-1) recorded 10 strikeouts and walked two batters.
Blazer starter Griffin Zarbough (2-2) took the loss for UAB (14-15, 2-7 C-USA) after pitching an inning and allowing five runs on five hits and one walk.
UAB and Memphis will play the second game of the three-game set Saturday at 2 p.m.
