Blazers Fall To Memphis 5-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Shortstop Brent Dlugach went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in helping lead Memphis to a 5-3 victory over UAB in Conference USA baseball action Saturday afternoon at Nat Buring Stadium.
Memphis (16-12, 5-6 C-USA) got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Dlugach doubled to right field, allowing left fielder Chad House to score the Tigers' first run of the inning. Catcher Kurt Welch followed with a singled through the left side, scoring Dlugach.
Memphis took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of solo home runs. Designated hitter Adam Amar led off the inning with a shot over the left center field wall. Later in the inning, with two outs, second baseman Michael Lewis sent one over the left field wall.
UAB (14-16, 2-8 C-USA) got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. After striking out, shortstop Josh Miljavac reached first on a wild pitch by Tiger starter Derek Hankins. Third baseman Zac Ward, who had doubled earlier in the inning, advanced to third on Hankins' wild pitch. He was then and able to score on an errant throw by Welch, who was attempting to put out Miljavac at first.
The Blazers cut the margin to one in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run homer to left field by Ward.
Memphis added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Dlugach singled through the left side, scoring third baseman Bill Moss.
Blazer starter Cole Helms (1-1) took the loss for UAB after pitching three and two-thirds innings and allowing four runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out four. Adam Price came on in relief of Helms in the bottom of the fourth inning and pitched the final four and one-third innings. Price allowed one run on two hits and struck out five without issuing a walk.
Hankins (4-3) picked up the win for Memphis after pitching six and one-third innings and allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. He walked one and struck out 11. Corey Hines came on in relief of Hankins in the top of the seventh inning and pitched two and two-thirds shut-out innings, without allowing a hit or walk, to record his second save of the season.
The game was delayed an hour and 26 minutes due to rain the area.
The teams will conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Memphis will be trying for a three-game sweep of the Blazers as the Tigers won the Friday contest 9-0.
