Memphis Tops UAB 7-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Catcher Kurt Welch went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double to help lead Memphis to a 7-3 victory and three-game sweep of UAB in Conference USA baseball action Sunday afternoon at Nat Buring Stadium.
UAB (14-17, 2-9 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when second baseman Seth Rollin singled to left field, scoring left fielder Matt Womble.
Memphis (17-12, 6-6 C-USA) answered with five runs in the bottom of third inning. The Tigers tied the score on left fielder Chad House's sacrifice fly to right field that scored first baseman Kyle Scott. Later in the inning, second baseman Michael Lewis was able to score from third base when Blazer catcher Eugene Rodriguez over threw second base, attempting to catch right fielder Jordan Hart stealing. Shortstop Brent Dlugach later doubled to right center field, scoring Hart. Welch followed with a double to right center field that brought in third baseman Bill Moss and Dlugach. Memphis led 5-1.
UAB got a run in the top of the fifth inning on Rodriguez's sacrifice fly to center field that scored Rollin.
The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hart singled to left field, scoring center fielder Josh Payne. Memphis led 6-2.
Memphis added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Blazer reliever Ryan Huffman walked Hart, bringing in designated hitter Adam Amar from third base.
The Blazers threatened in the top of the ninth inning. UAB posted a run when Rollin doubled to left field, scoring first baseman Daniel Hill. Shortstop Josh Miljavac then reached on a fielder's choice. After center fielder Sam Clark struck out for the Blazers' second out of the inning, Rodriguez walked to load the bases. After battling to a 3-2 count, third baseman Zac Ward flew out to center field to end the game.
Blazer starter Jeff Brown (2-3) took the loss for UAB after pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing six runs on six hits. He walked six and struck out one.
Tiger starter Bill Edwards (2-2) picked up the win for Memphis after working six and two-thirds innings and allowing two runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out two. Michael Novarese got his first save of the season after pitching the final third of an inning.
The Blazers, who have now lost eight in a row, were defeated by Memphis 5-3 Saturday and 9-0 Sunday.
