CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Designated hitter Nathan McCorkle went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, three runs scored and a career-high five RBI in helping lead UAB to a 9-8 victory over Charlotte in Conference USA baseball action Sunday afternoon at Phillips Field. With the win, UAB completed a three-game sweep of the 49ers.
"This sweep was huge," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "It's just big. We are playing pretty well right now. We are making plays and we're getting enough pitching to get us through. We're just excited right now."
UAB (20-19, 7-10 C-USA), who has now won six games in a row, including a five-game C-USA winning streak, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of bases-loaded walks by Charlotte starter Zachary Treadway. Treadway walked left fielder Jeremy Moran, allowing first baseman Daniel Hill to score the Blazers' first run of the inning. He then walked second baseman Seth Rollin, scoring McCorkle.
Charlotte (16-21, 6-12 C-USA), who suffered its fourth straight loss, tied the score in the bottom of the first. First baseman Jamie Rusco singled through the right side, allowing right fielder Adam Willard to score the 49ers' first run of the inning. Designated hitter Kris Rochelle later grounded out to shortstop, allowing Rusco to score from third base.
The Blazers posted four runs in the top of the second inning. McCorkle singled through the right side, allowing shortstop Josh Miljavac and catcher Eugene Rodriguez to score UAB's first runs of the inning. Moran later doubled to left center field, scoring Hill and McCorkle. UAB led 6-2.
The 49ers cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run homer to right field by Rusco.
UAB got out to a 9-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a three-run home run to left field by McCorkle.
Charlotte plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Willard led off the inning with a home run to right field. Rochelle later hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored shortstop Thomas Bowker.
The 49ers cut the lead to one in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run homer to left field by Willard.
Right fielder Cole Helms came on to pitch the ninth inning and retired the 49ers in order, recording two strikeouts, to earn his first save of the season.
Blazer starter Adam Price (3-5) picked up the win for UAB after working six innings and allowing five runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out four.
Treadway (2-6) took the loss for Charlotte after working one and a third innings and giving up six runs on five hits and walking three.
UAB returns home to Young Memorial Field Tuesday to take on Mississippi State at 7 p.m.
