BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Catcher Craig Tatum went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in helping lead Mississippi State to a 12-2 victory over UAB in baseball action Tuesday evening at Young Memorial Field.
Bulldog starter Josh Johnson (5-1) picked up the win for MSU after pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Blazer starter Lyle Northington (1-1) took the loss after working two and one-third innings and giving up five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits.
MSU posted 17 hits in the contest to UAB's eight. The Bulldogs committed two errors to the Blazers' one.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for UAB (20-20, 7-10 C-USA).
UAB took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homer to right field by catcher Eugene Rodriguez.
Mississippi State (27-15, 8-10 Southeastern Conference) tied the score in the top of the second inning. Third baseman Thomas Berkery singled to right field, allowing first baseman Brad Jones to score the Bulldogs' first run of the inning. Later in the inning, second baseman Jeffrey Rea reached first on an infield single. Northington's errant throw on the putout attempt at first allowed center fielder Joseph Hunter to score.
The Bulldogs got out to a 6-2 advantage in the top of the third inning. Tatum doubled to right center field, allowing right fielder Brad Corley to score MSU's first run of the inning. Designated hitter Tyler Scarbrough later doubled to right field, scoring Tatum. Hunter later singled to right center field, scoring Berkery. The Bulldogs' final run of the inning came when left fielder Jeff Butts grounded out to second base, allowing Berkery to score from third.
Mississippi State added a run in the top of the fourth inning when Tatum singled up the middle, scoring Corley. The Bulldogs led 7-2.
The Bulldogs got a run in the top of the fifth inning when shortstop Steve Gendron singled to center field, scoring Rea.
MSU took a 10-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Rea tripled to right center field, allowing Butts to score the Bulldogs' first run of the inning. Corley later grounded out to shortstop, allowing Rea to score from third base.
The Bulldogs posted two runs in the top of the ninth inning. MSU's first run of the inning came on pinch hitter Josh Thoms' sacrifice fly to right field that scored Ben Grisham, who had pinch hit for Corley. Tyler Jones, who had come on to play center field for Hunter in the bottom of the eighth inning, later singled to left field, scoring Ryan Harbuck, who had pinch hit for Jones.
UAB will host No. 12 Southern Miss over the weekend at Young Memorial Field. Friday, the teams square off at 7 p.m., Saturday's game begins at 2 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
