BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- UAB track and field head coach Ray Stanfield announced the signing of two Alabama natives for the 2005 season on Saturday. The Blazers inked Stacey Adewakun of Auburn High and Erica Russ of Hoover High School.
"These two girls round out a tremendous class of Alabama high school signees for us," said Stanfield. "With Tara Colvin signing early, we compliment the outstanding class we signed last year. The talent in Alabama is very good and we continue to be fortunate in signing them."
Adewakun was a 6A state champion in the 100-meters from Auburn High School in Auburn, Ala. She was also state runner-up in the 200-meters. In addition, Adewakun runs relays and competes in the long jump for Auburn and ran the fastest time in the state last year in the 100-meters and 200-meters.
Russ is an eight-time state champion hurdler from Hoover High Scool in Hoover, Ala. She also runs relays for the Bucs.
Adewakun and Russ are the first signess for UAB in the current signing period. They join Taresa Chatman, Tracy Rowan, Tara Colvin, Elizabeth Hilligross and Christi Walton who all signed with the Blazers during the early signing period in November.
