BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The women's tennis team recorded a 4-3 tightly contested win over Georgia State here Saturday afternoon. The win was the fourth consecutive for the Lady Blazers, marking UAB's longest winning streak of the 2003-04 campaign.
The Lady Blazers (11-12, 4-4) split the singles matches and clinched their fourth consecutive victory in the doubles matches. UAB was led by Marrit Jansma who won both her matches on the afternoon. Jansma opened the day at No. 3 singles and defeated Simona Foltyn, 7-6, 6-4. Annemieke Elsholz and Samrin Tanzeem also won their singles matches. Elsholz won a hard-fought battle at the No. 2 position over Rebecca Mitchell (2-6, 6-4, 6-1), while Samrin Tanzeem defeated Christina Stewart, 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 6 position. Femke de Boer (6-0, 6-2) fell at No. 1 singles, Julia von Samson (7-5, 6-4) lost at the No. 4 position and Nadia Dellarciprete (6-4, 6-4) fell at the No. 5 spot.
In doubles, de Boer and Jansma defeated Rivera and Foltyn, 8-5, at the No. 1 spot, while Dellarciprete and Tanzeem captured the match at the No. 3 position, defeating Breiholtz and Stewart, 8-4. Elsholz and von Samson were down Mitchell and Doliska, 7-4, when the match was called.
"I am very happy with this win," head coach Mert Ertunga said. "I am especially happy that Marrit won both of her matches. She has suffered some losses lately and I felt it was unfair considering how hard she always works on the court. Today was her reward, as well as ours. Without her effort today we would have come out on the losing end."
The Lady Blazers will next close out the regular season when they face Conference USA foe Marquette on Sunday, April 11 at 11 a.m.
