Blazers Win Six Events At SEMO Invitational Track Meet

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. --- The UAB Blazer track and field team continued its string of success by winning six events at the SEMO Triangular Meet held Friday night on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
The Blazers faced competition from host Southeast Missouri State, Austin Peay, Lipscomb, Murray State and Conference USA foe Memphis. The meet was the final tune-up before the C-USA Indoor Championships next week.
Elizabeth Ambrus led the way winning two events. First, she won the Mile Run in 5:16.20 and followed that by claiming the 3000-meters later in the evening with a time of 10:35.16. In each race she held off teammate Jennifer Thompson (5:20.03 and 10:47.37) for the victories. Oriana Carter led the sprinters taking first place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.14 seconds. Elace Minnifield out-distanced the field in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.37 and Genoah Collins won the 600-meter dash crossing the line in 1:35.42. The UAB "A" 4 x 400 relay team added another title to their season winning Friday's race in 3:57.92.
Other impressive UAB showings were second and third place finishes by Theresa Smith and Judy Shepard in the 55-meter hurdles and Petra Ivanova finishing second in the 1000-meter Run. Blazers Crystal Hunter, Normanie McKenzie and Shauntae Lockett finished 2-3-4 in the 300-meter dash and Stephanie McCauley, Carter and Erin Harris took second, fourth and sixth respectively in the 200-meter dash.
Tori Stanfield and Mary Kim Webb each added third place finishes. Stanfield rounded out the UAB trifecta in the Mile Run while Webb's third place finish was in the 600-meter dash.
The Blazers will travel to Houston, the site of the CUSA Indoor Championships, Thursday. Competition will begin Friday and conclude Saturday.
