UAB Women's Tennis Team Downs Birmingham-Southern, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis won five-of-six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory Friday over cross-town foe Birmingham-Southern. The match was played at the BSC Tennis Complex.
Though the Blazers (2-6) were victorious in all but one singles match, four of those matchups were extended to three sets with two decided in super tie-breakers.
"I thought the girls showed great character today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga, "even though we didn't play especially well overall. What we were able to do was pull out some close matches and that was the difference. I was especially happy for Femke (de Boer) and Marrit (Jansma) for their wins (as each posted a first-time singles win in dual matches).
The Blazers were able to claim the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Nadia Dellarciprete and Jansma teamed at No. 2 to defeat Laura Kirk and Daisy Humphrey, 8-5, while the No. 3 match was won by UAB's duo of Samrin Tanzeem and Julia von Samson over Stephanie Boucher and Casey Ragsdale.
It was de Boer's win at No. 1 singles over Charlotte Ann Kelly of BSC (6-3, 6-0) that got the Blazers going. Jansma downed Boucher at the No. 3 spot, 7-6, 6-4, while von Samson won in straight sets at No. 4 over the Panthers' Kirk, 7-5, 6-0.
Dellarciprete outlasted Cammie Nix at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 4-6, 13-11 and Tanzeem won a similar tight match for UAB at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 victory over Ragsdale. Birmingham-Southern, which lost for the first time this season (3-1), captured its only win at No. 2 singles as Humphrey defeated Annemieke Elsholz, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.
UAB is back in action Saturday as the Blazers travel to Southeastern Conference foe Auburn for a 2:00 p.m. match.
