UAB Women's Tennis Falls To Mississippi State, 4-0

STARKVILLE, Miss. ----- The UAB women's tennis team, facing yet another formidable early season opponent, fell by a 4-0 score here Sunday to Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State.
Because of inclement weather, the match was played indoors with only two courts in use at a time. Typically playing doubles first, the teams opted for singles in this case because of the limited courts.
MSU (4-2) was able to clinch the match quickly with straight-set victories at the top four singles positions.
At No. 1, the Bulldogs' Marcelle Hirt defeated UAB's Femke de Boer by a 6-3, 6-1 score. MSU's Anastasia Kugakolova was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles over the Blazers' Annemieke Elsholz while Magdi Rekasi won at No. 3 for State, taking a 6-4, 6-0 win over UAB's Marrit Jansma.
MSU's final singles victory came at No. 4 where Tarryn Rudman disposed of the Blazers' Julia von Samson, 6-2, 6-0.
"This was another difficult match for us," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga, whose team fell to 1-6 with the loss. "Mississippi State was just the better team. I don't think we have played a tougher first seven matches in a season since I have been here."
UAB's next action will come Friday, Feb. 20 when the Blazers travel to nearby Birmingham-Southern for a dual match.
