LEXINGTON, Ky. --- Five Wildcat players scored in double-digits as Kentucky defeated the UAB women's basketball team, 90-60 Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 4,183 at Memorial Coliseum. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 7-3 while the Blazers fall to 1-8. Jennifer Humphrey and Nastassia Alcius each had 18 points for Kentucky who shot almost 58 percent from the floor during the game. Carmen Guzman led all UAB players with 18 points.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the game. With the Blazers connecting on just 31 percent of their field goals and just 33 percent of their free throws in the first half, Kentucky forced 13 turnovers and took a 47-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. Humphrey and Alcius both poured in 14 of their 18 points in the opening half.
UAB came out strong to open the second half, scoring seven of the half's first nine points. But Kentucky rebounded and continued its strong shooting, pulling away from the Blazers. Kentucky's Sara Potts and UAB' Guzman led all players with ten points in the half.
The Blazers dominated the glass throughout the game, outrebounding Kentucky by a 45-30 margin. Domaneice Moore, playing in her first game of the season for UAB, led the way with eight boards. Moore also contributed with 14 points in her season debut. LaKitha Murray and Deirdre Larry each pulled down seven rebounds for the Blazers.
Despite the loss, UAB head coach Audra Smith feels her squad has gained valuable experience by playing high-profile opponents such as Kentucky in front of large crowds.
"I definitely think this is a valuable experience which we take a lot out of," said Smith. "We've played at some big places now, and I really feel the experience will help us with our upcoming conference schedule."
The Blazers return to action Tuesday when they travel to South Alabama for a 7 p.m. game against the Jaguars in Mobile.
