Women's Basketball Falls at South Alabama, 62-42

MOBILE, Ala. --- South Alabama held the UAB women's basketball team to a 24.4 percent field-goal percentage as the Lady Jags defeated the Blazers, 62-42 Tuesday evening in the Mitchell Center. With the win, South Alabama improves to 4-5 while the Blazers fall to 1-9, including six straight defeats. UAB's Carmen Guzman scored 13 points to go along with four rebounds and career-high six steals to lead the Blazers.
The Lady Jags went into the locker room with a 25-18 advantage at halftime after forcing 14 turnovers and holding the Blazers to a 5-of-22 shooting performance from the field. Guzman led all scorers with nine points while South Alabama's JoAnna Williams and Valencia Boswell combined for 14 points and seven boards in the opening half.
South Alabama continued to build its lead and pulled away for good in the second half after knocking down 14-of-23 field goals, including three of seven three-point attempts. Williams, Boswell and Kimyatta Viverette all finished the game in double-figures for the Lady Jags who blocked a season-high 12 shots as a team.
UAB's LaKitha Murray and Deirdre Larry finished the night with career-high point totals for the Blazers. Murray had ten points, including a 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line. Larry scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds. The Blazers outrebounded South Alabama by a margin of 41-32, marking the sixth time in ten games they have pulled down more boards than their opponent.
The Blazers will return home to host the Blazer Invitational on Dec. 29-30 in Bartow Arena. Alabama State, Furman and Tennessee State are the other teams participating in the tournament.
