ATLANTA --- The UAB volleyball team was beaten by Georgia State, 3-0, here on Tuesday evening, as the Lady Panthers had four players with seven or more kills. The Blazers (1-15, 0-4) hung tough in all three games, but fell 30-27, 31-29, 30-22.
"We've had some players who have been more consistent lately," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "Tonight, however, some of our key components just were not there. You have to hand it to Georgia State because they have some good players. We just did not make the adjustments we needed to make."
Charli Lindley was one dig short of a double-double, as she tallied 10 kills and nine defensive digs for UAB. Lindley also registered a team-high 44 total attacks. Isabel Oquendo also had 10 kills for UAB, to go along with her 32 total attacks. Jenna Link led the Blazers with 40 set assists, while Briana Galvin had 23 digs.
Game two was the pivotal game, as UAB led 18-9, but allowed Georgia State (7-12) to tie the match after a 10-1 run. The Blazers fought off one game point by the Lady Panthers at 29-28, but committed a hitting error and allowed a kill by Robyn van Dam to take the game, 31-29.
The Blazers were close in the opening game as well. UAB had a 17-14 lead, but allowed Georgia State to come back and take a 24-22 lead. The Lady Panthers got to game point after consecutive kills by junior Danielle Gonzalez put Georgia State up, 29-26. UAB fought off the Lady Panthers' first game point, but couldn't rally and take the game.
UAB returns to Birmingham when they host DePaul on Friday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. and Marquette on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.
