Cross Country Finishes Second At Belmont Invitational

NASHVILLE ----- The UAB cross country team started the 2003 season with an impressive second-place finish at the Belmont Invitational here on Friday. The second-place finish is the highest for UAB under second-year head coach Ray Stanfield. The Blazers' previous best under Stanfield was a fifth-place finish at the UAH Invitational during the 2002 season.
Freshman Emry McKay was the Blazers' highest finisher, placing fourth overall with a time of 11:06.38 in the two-mile run. UAB had four other runners finish in the top-35, including three freshmen. Senior Amanda Kara finished 17th with a time of 11:26.63. Freshman Elizabeth Ambrus was 28th, running a time of 11:40.43, (29th). Fellow freshmen, Adel Anderson completed the run in 11:47.24, while Jennifer Thompson's time of 11:49.17 gave her a 31st-place finish.
Vanderbilt took the team title with 46 points, while UAB's 13 runners tallied 100 points, ahead of third-place Western Kentucky's total of 106. Southern Indiana's 111 points were just enough to finish in fourth, ahead of Alabama's 112. Samford finished with 120 points, while host Belmont had 122. Evansville, Lipscomb and Beville Community College rounded out the field.
114 runners competed in the event. All 13 of the Blazers' athletes finished in the top-95.
UAB will next compete in the UAH Invitational on September 13 in Huntsville, Ala.
