LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The UAB women's soccer team used a pair of goals from junior Jenny Rynders to defeat the Louisville Lady Cardinals on Sunday as the Blazers extended their winning streak to four-consecutive matches with a 3-0 victory on the road.
With the lopsided win, UAB (6-2, 2-0) swept its second straight weekend of matches and improved to 2-1 on the season in road contests. On Friday, Sept. 26, the Blazers will play at home in Birmingham against the Cincinnati Bearcats at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field.
"This was a good win for us today," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We started off a bit flat in the first half, but fortunately our defense was able to hold it together and they really made some outstanding saves for us. Katie Forbis played a really solid game in goal and our team defense did a great job of holding off some of Louisville's attacks."
Rynders, the Blazers' talented midfielder from Marietta, Ga., opened the scoring at the 21:51 mark in Sunday's Conference USA matchup as she beat the Lady Cardinals' Meredith Miller with a shot into the top far corner of the net. The goal was Rynders' first of the day and was assisted by both Tara Kidwell and Jessica Samulski.
Louisville (3-2-1, 0-1-1) attacked the Blazer defense in the first half of play and forced UAB's freshman goalkeeper Katie Forbis to make a number of top-notch saves. Forbis, a native of Memphis, Tenn., played 79 minutes on Sunday and finished the contest with six saves. The Blazers' Julie McFarlane played the final 11 minutes of the match and concluded with one save.
UAB's Tara Kidwell added the Blazers' second goal of the match early in the second half of play. On the scoring strike, Kidwell gathered a pass from Briana McCarty and drilled a shot from the top of the box into the corner of the net. The goal, Kidwell's third of the season, occurred at 51:34.
"I was very pleased with our rhythm of play in the second half," Harbin said. "We changed our system a bit at the half and our players did a great job of executing the offense and we were able to add some more goals. We played the way that we are capable of playing in the second half, but we just need to do a better job of putting it together for the full 90 minutes."
At 69:40, UAB upped its lead to 3-0 over the Lady Cardinals as Rynders scored her second goal of the match. On the play, UAB's Liz Bosscher fed a pass to forward Jill Knottek who aimed a pin-point cross to Rynders for the score.
The UAB women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 26, as the Blazers return home to host their C-USA rival Cincinnati at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field. - agate to follow -
