Cross Country Heads To Tuscaloosa For Crimson Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB cross country team will continue its 2003 season this Friday, Sept. 19, by heading down to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama.
"This is a good meet for us this weekend," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "The level of competition will be higher in this event than the other two we've been in. We're looking forward to being tested. We've had a good week of training. We look to get after it and see how we do with this difficult test."
The competition will be the strongest the Blazers have faced this season. The are 12 teams scheduled to participate in the event, including Southeastern Conference foes Alabama, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Ole Miss. In addition, C-USA rival Southern Miss will be competing as well. Also participating in the women's cross country race are Alabama State, Arkansas State, Clayton College, Samford, Jacksonville State, North Alabama and Louisiana Tech.
In this same event last season, UAB finished seventh out of 13 teams. The Blazers were led by junior Amanda Kara who placed 10th in the individual standings with a time of 19:28. Rounding out the Blazers' individuals were Heather Burdette (27th), Rina Kara (35th), Emily Scarbrough (36th) and Donna Pucke (51st).
