Martina Shields Named To Preseason All-C-USA Team

CHICAGO - Martina Shields of the UAB volleyball team was one of six players named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team as chosen by the league's 14 head coaches, it was announced Wednesday.
Shields capped off a career season for UAB in 2002, leading the team in kills (457), kills per game (4.04), digs (316), digs per game (2.80) and double-doubles (14). The senior from Scarborough, Ontario, Canada ranks eighth on UAB's all-time career list in kills (983) and 10th in kill attempts (2,577). She recorded 26 matches with double digits in kills and led the Blazers in kills in 20 matches last season.
UAB opens the season Aug. 29 against Virginia at 10 a.m. at the Tiger Classic hosted by LSU. The Blazers will host Mississippi State in their home opener Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
