BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team took the practice field for the first time of the preseason here Tuesday for a two-and-a-half hour session.
The Blazers were fortunate to complete practice just before evening thunderstorms made their way to the UAB campus.
Tuesday's full squad workout was a contrast to previous seasons when freshmen reported to camp three days before the varsity. The NCAA as part of a five-day acclimation process implemented the change.
"I was happy with how things went today," said Brown. "I think we have more depth this year than we've had, but it's hard to get the freshmen on the field. We've got to get them some looks. A lot of schools are having to adjust to this."
Brown was pleased with his team's physical condition for a first practice. "It looks like the varsity came back in good condition," he said. "(Strength & Conditioning coach) Marcus (Bush) did a good job with the guys this summer. Now we just have to get them in playing condition."
Brown noted only one position change from the spring as redshirt freshman Quinton Harris of Courtland, Ala. has been shifted from the defensive front to the offensive line. "I thought he looked pretty good for a first day," said Brown.
The Blazers will continue their workouts Wednesday, again in the late afternoon.
The Blazers will open their 2003 season on Saturday, Aug. 30 (6:00 p.m. CT) when they travel to Waco, Texas to meet Big XII Conference foe Baylor.
