Birmingham, Ala. --- The UAB women's cross country team received the Conference USA Sport Academic Award, announced by the conference commissioner Britton Banowsky Thursday.
The Sport Academic Award is given to the team in each conference-sponsered sport with the highest grade point average for the current academic year. The players' women's cross country team, coached by Ray Stanfield, compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.67 for the 2002-03 academic year.
"Of my 28 years of coaching, I have always yold kids that you can only run or compete for so long," said Stanfield. "Then you have to rely on that piece of paper you hang on your wall, so academics is first. This cross country team proves that. We hope to get better athleticism and continue with academic excellence. I am really proud of those girls."
