HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Stephen Castleman recorded a career-high nine strikeouts to help lead Southern Miss (34-11, 17-4 Conference USA) to a 2-1 victory over UAB (21-21, 6-14) in Conference USA baseball action Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park. The win gave Southern Miss a three-game sweep of the series.
Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Clint King scored the Golden Eagles' first run of the game on second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir's sacrifice fly to right field. Third baseman Adam Smith followed with a single that brought in left fielder Jason Lowery.
UAB answered with a run in the top of the eighth inning when center fielder Sam Clark singled up the middle, scoring left fielder Mitch Jones.
Castleman (5-1) worked seven and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on four hits and three walks. Austin Tubb came on in relief of Castleman in the eighth inning and recorded one strikeout to pick up his third save of the series and his eighth of the season. Tubb retired UAB in order in the top of the ninth.
Blazer starter Scott Gibson (5-2) took the loss after pitching a complete game three-hitter. Gibson allowed two runs and two walks and recorded a season-high seven strikeouts.
"Scott (Gibson) gave us a great performance today," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "We just were not able to capitalize on some of the opportunities we had."
UAB next plays at cross-town rival Birmingham-Southern Tuesday at 7 p.m.
