BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - TCU used seven runs on nine hits to shut out UAB 7-0 in Conference USA baseball action Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
TCU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Center fielder Terry Trofholz reached first base on an error by UAB shortstop Will Justin, allowing shortstop Shaff Elkouri to score from third base. The Horned Frogs second run came on third baseman Mike Settle's sacrifice fly to center field that scored designated hitter Ramon Moses.
The Horned Frogs added a run in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Justin Hatcher was able to score after stealing third base on an errant throw by UAB catcher Eugene Rodriguez, who was attempting to put out Hatcher on the steal attempt.
TCU went up 7-0 in the top of the fifth inning. The Horned Frogs got three runs off second baseman Will Lewis' triple down the left field line that scored left fielder Chris Meeks, Settle and first baseman Jared Lundeen. Right fielder Jake Duncan followed with a single up the middle that scored Lewis.
Horned Frog starter Kyle Shoemaker (4-2) picked up the win for TCU after working seven innings and allowing only four hits to go along with one walk and five strikeouts.
Blazer starter Jon Burgett (4-2) took the loss for UAB after pitching four and one-third innings and allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on five hits. He walked one and struck out two. Jeff Brown, Lyle Northington, Griffin Zarbough, Kevin Brannon and Allen West all saw action out of the Blazer bullpen.
"We missed some pitches today and we had some errors that hurt us," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "We couldn't solve their lefthander (Kyle Shoemaker). We have to put our offense back together and get back with it tomorrow."
UAB (21-12, 6-7 C-USA) and TCU (22-15, 9-5 C-USA) will play the final game of the three-game set Sunday at noon.
