BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Clayton Jerome threw an eight-inning shutout to help lift TCU (21-15, 8-5 Conference USA) to a 1-0 victory over UAB (21-11, 6-6 C-USA) in Conference USA baseball action Friday evening at Young Memorial Field.
TCU's lone run came in the top of the first inning when third baseman Mike Settle grounded out to second base, allowing center fielder Terry Trofholz to score from third base.
The Blazers left eight runners on base and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jerome started the game and gave up only four hits to go along with 13 strikeouts and one walk. Ryan Weems came on in relief in the bottom of the ninth and recorded one strikeout to pick up his second save of the season.
Blazer starter Lucas Trotter (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season in 10 appearances after working seven and one-third innings and allowing one run on six hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Cody Cillo came on in relief of Trotter and pitched one and two-thirds innings and recorded two strikeouts.
"I thought their guy (Clayton Jerome) did a good job and Lucas (Trotter) pitched well enough," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "We just had too many opportunities to score a run and it didn't happen. He (Jerome) stayed in his groove and we never could get him out of it."
UAB and TCU will meet in the second game of the three-game set Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will follow the UAB football spring scrimmage which begins at 1:30 p.m.
