UAB's Track and Field Heads to Starkville

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB's track and field team will participate in its fourth outdoor meet of the season this Saturday when it competes in the Jace Lacoste Invitational hosted by Mississippi State University.
The Blazers will face competitors from Conference USA rivals Memphis and Southern Miss, along with instate competitors from Alabama at Huntsville and Birmingham-Southern.
The Blazers have had an impressive start this season with sophomore Theresa Smith qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.99 at the Samford Open. Smith then broke her record the following week at the Alabama Relays when she finished competition with a time of 13.73, a time she repeated at the Florida Relays on March 28. Teammate Olivia Ross-Hurst marked herself down in UAB history with her performance at the Samford Open with her javelin throw of 163-7. Ross-Hurst broke the record toss of 127-1, set in 2000 by Nakeshia Jackson.
The UAB relay team continues to be impressive with its record-breaking times. At the Florida Relays, the Blazer team of Judy Shepherd, Ross-Hurst, Adrienne Duke and Smith set a school record in the 4X100 meter shuttle hurdles, with a time of 1:00.64. The team of Duke, Normanie McKenzie, Doella Miller and Elace Minnifield finished the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 3:47.32, second-fastest in UAB history. In the 4X100 meter relay, Crystal Hunter, Miller, Minnifield and Smith finished with a time of 46.72, fifth-fastest in school history.
