UAB Tennis Gears Up For Stiff Competition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's and women's tennis teams continue their 2003 season, as the men's team hosts conference foe, Marquette and the women's team travels to No. 23 Alabama and Georgia State.
UAB women's tennis team (8-4, 2-1), winners of three straight matches, head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday, March 22, when it faces No. 23 Alabama at noon. On Sunday, March 23, the Blazers will be in Atlanta to battle the Panthers at 9 a.m. Alabama (12-3, 4-2 SEC) is off to its best start in the Southeastern Conference since 1997 after beating Mississippi State and Ole Miss last weekend. Senior Sophie Cremers is 15-0 in singles on the season. As of March 12, Millie Begovic is ranked 97th in singles and 55th in doubles with teammate Robin Stephenson. Georgia State (5-6) picked up a victory over No. 75 Hampton 4-3 on March 10. The Lady Panthers rallied from a one-point deficit, after losing the doubles point, to win four of the six singles matches. Freshman Anne Breiholtz has not lost while playing in the No. 1 position for the Lady Panthers and has a nine-match winning streak.
The UAB men's tennis team (8-10, 1-1), had a disappointing weekend at the Blue/Gray Tennis Classic, as they lost all three matches they played. UAB fell to No. 13 North Carolina, 4-1, and No. 46 Notre Dame, 4-2, in its first day of competition on March 14. Marquette men's tennis team dropped to 2-8 on the season as they lost to the second-ranked team in division II, Brigham Young University-Hawaii, 6-1, on March 12. Golden Eagle Eigintas Vedrickas came away with a win after No. 11 Peter Madarassy retired due to a muscle pull in the No. 2 singles match. Vedrickas improved his season record to a team-high 8 wins and 12 losses.
