Women's Golf Team In Second After Day One At Carolinas Classic

PINEHURST, N.C. -- The UAB women's golf team ia in second place after the first round of the Edwin Watts/Carolinas Classic golf tournament here Friday.
The women finished the day at 310, just one stroke off the leader, Jacksonville State. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 5,898-yard Pinehurst #8 golf course.
All five UAB golfers finished in 21st or better on the day in the 122-golfer, 20-team field. Brooke Mangan led the Lady Blazers, and sits in second place, by carding a two over par 74 (36-38) on the day. Katie Kane is also in the top 15, tying for 12th with a round 78 (39-39). Jenni Elmore (40-39), Liz Schweihs (40-39) and Janey Deimling (39-40) each sit in a tie for 21st overall with a 79.
"I was really pleased with the way we played today," said UAB head golf coach Kim Wilcox. "The golf course played tough today, because the conditions were wet and cold. I was proud of the way we came through and hopefully we can improve on Saturday."
Jacksonville State leads all teams with a score of 309, while East Carolina sits in third with a 311. UNC Wilmington (313) and Georgia State (314) round out the top five teams.
The second round of the tournament will begin Saturday morning with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.
