Baseball Team Defeats Mississippi Valley State 18-5

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB extended its record to 3-0, defeating Mississippi Valley State (0-6) 18-5 in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Designated hitter Matt Womble went 3-4 with a a three-run home run, a two-run homer, five RBI and four runs scored to lead the Blazers. Right fielder Kyle Leon hit his second home run of the year, catcher Brett Tilley, who was making his first start of the year, had a two-run homer, and left fielder Mitch Jones also hit his second home run of the year, a two-run shot to left center field, for the Blazers.
"We are real happy with the way we swung the bats," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "I was real proud for Matt Womble because he had been struggling a little bit, but he swung the bat well today. All in all, we have a great opportunity here if we can come in tomorrow and sweep the series. That is very important to us."
Jon Burgett (1-0) got the win for UAB after working five innings and allowing only one run, which was unearned, and two hits. He walked two and struck out one. Rusty McIntyre pitched three innings in relief of Burgett and gave up two runs (one earned) and one hit. He walked five and struck out two. Chris Thorup worked the final inning for the Blazers and allowed two runs on two hits. He walked one and struck out one.
"We walked a lot of guys today and I am a little disappointed in that, but overall I thought Jon (Burgett) battled hard and threw pretty well," said Giangrosso.
Tim Klick led Mississippi Valley State with a double and two RBI.
Andrew Williams (0-2) took the loss for the Delta Devils after working two and one-third innings and allowing six runs on three hits. Williams walked four and struck out one.
UAB will try for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
