Baseball Team Completes Three Game Sweep Of Mississippi Valley State

UAB used 12 runs off 14 hits, led by catcher Eugene Rodriguez who was 3-4 with three RBI, to top the Delta Devils. Third baseman Steve Martin was 3-5 with four stolen bases, three runs scored and an RBI. Center fielder Sam Clark went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, right fielder Kyle Leon was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored and first baseman Daniel Hill went 2-3 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Blazers.
"We swung the bat really well this weekend," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "Today was a good win for us. It is refreshing to see us swing the bat so well. We are real happy with the sweep. We had an opportunity and we made the best of it and that is what I am proud of. Our guys played hard and played real well for three games."
Scott Gibson (1-0) picked up the win for UAB after working four innings and allowing no runs and four hits. He walked one and struck out five. Northington came on in relief of Gibson in the top of the fifth inning and pitched two innings and allowed only one hit and five walks. Jeff Brown pitched two innings in relief of Northington and allowed one run on two hits. He walked none and struck out one. Kevin Brannon worked the final inning for the Blazers and tied a career-high with three strikeouts.
"It was good to see Scott (Gibson) throw today," said Giangrosso. "He is coming back off his surgery and he gave us four solid innings. I thought Jeff Brown came in and did another good job. I also thought Kevin (Brannon) threw well in the final inning."
Shortstop Tee Thomas was 2-4 with an RBI to lead the Delta Devils.
Jonathan Grantham (0-1) took the loss for Mississippi Valley State. Grantham pitched three and one-third innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. He walked six and struck out four.
UAB returns to Young Memorial Field Tuesday to take on cross-town rival Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m.
