BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB's freshman guard Carmen Guzman was named to the Long Island University All-Tournament team after scoring 43 points over two games in the tournament. Guzman, a New York native, led the Lady Blazers with 19 points against Arkansas State and 24 versus Southern Illinois.
"Carmen had a tremendous tournament for us," said UAB head coach Jeannie Milling. "I think it was really special for her to get to play in front of so many family members and friends. She is getting better every game and gets more and more comfortable in our offense. Carmen is a very smart player who responds well to coaching and understands the game."
Guzman also tallied seven assists, six rebounds and six steals as she came off the bench in both games. She shot an impressive 16-of-23 from the floor and was 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. Guzman played a total of 48 minutes in the tournament and only committed two turnovers while often playing the point.
The Lady Blazers fell to Arkansas State, 84-77, in the opening round of the tournament, but rebounded to defeat Southern Illinois, 85-72, in the consolation round.
UAB will travel to the Unilever Tiger Tournament in Columbia, Mo., to face Tulsa on Friday, Dec. 5, at 5:00 p.m. (CT).
