BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- UAB cross country head coach Ray Stanfield announced the signing of two Alabama natives for the 2004-05 season on Wednesday. The Blazers inked Taresa Chatman of Hewitt-Trussville High School and Tracy Rowan of Clay-Chalkville High School.
"These two ladies round out a great early signing period for our program," said Stanfield. "We have signed five quality student-athletes, but more importantly five outstanding young adults."
Chatman is a state-champion 400-meter and 800-meter runner from Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Ala.
"Taresa was 400 and 800 state champion last season and was impressive," said Stanfield. "Under new coach David Dobbs she looks to be in the best condition of her career and I look for her to have another successful season."
Rowan has been a successful heptathlete and cross country runner at Clay-Chalkville High School in Clay, Ala. She finished in the top 20 at the Alabama State Cross Country meet earlier this year.
"Tracy has come up through our summer track camps and has great potential as a heptathlete at the collegiate level," Stanfield said. "She is versatile, as shown by her top-20 finish in the state cross country meet this year."
Chatman and Rowan join Tara Colin, Elizabeth Hilligross and Christi Walton as the first signees for the Blazers during the current signing period.
