BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- UAB cross country and track head coach Ray Stanfield announced on Saturday the signing of three runners for the 2004-05 season. The Blazers have received signed letters of intent from Tara Colvin of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Elizabeth Hilligoss of Houston, and Chrisi Walton of Lithonia, Ga.
"These young ladies add to the great freshman class we signed last year," said Stanfield. "We are very proud to have these girls wearing the green and gold of UAB."
Colvin is a six-time Alabama State Champion from Northridge High School. Colvin has won championships in the 400 meters and as a member of the 4x400 relay team.
"Tara has dominated the state of Alabama in the 400 meters for a couple of years now," said Stanfield. "I think she is primed to do it again this year."
Hilligoss is a two-time Texas state qualifier in cross country for Stratford High School.
"I look for Elizabeth to fit in perfectly with the young group of distance runners we already have," replied Stanfield. "She is one of the top cross country girls in the state of Texas and is only going to make our squad better."
Walton is a middle distance runner from Lithonia High School. She recently qualified for the state cross country meet.
"Christi is one of those special runners who has combined speed with distance," commented Stanfield. She is an excellent miler and I look for good things from her."
Colin, Hilligross and Walton are the first signees for the Blazers during the current signing period.
