Volleyball Finishes Second At UAB Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team (2-5, 0-0 Conference USA) finished second at the UAB Invitational hosted at Bartow Arena after defeating East Tennessee State 25-30, 30-24, 25-30, 30-17, 15-10.
Martina Shields and Nanea Holmes led the Blazers, as they each posted 15 kills. Holmes also had 14 digs to record her second double-double of the season. Breanne Swenson also recorded a double-double for the Blazers, as she posted 11 kills and 13 digs. Kilee Goetz also added a UAB career high 60 assists.
Shields and Karen Boyd were named to the all-tournament team.
"Today was a total team effort," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "We set specific goals and were able to accomplish all of them. It was by far the most balanced team performance we have had thus far. Now we have to go back to work on continuing to raise the level for next weekend's tournament."
Troy State won the tournament and had three players represented on the all-tournament squad. Rachel Hassan was the tournament MVP and Haven Triboulet and Erica Leitzke were also named to the all-tournament team. In addition, Kate Steidle was also named to the all-tournament team.
UAB next travels to Ogden, Utah to compete in the Ogden Marriott Weber State Classic Friday and Saturday.
