Volleyball Knocks Off Winthrop

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - UAB (4-10, 0-0 Conference USA) defeated Winthrop (8-6, 0-0 Big South) 30-20, 22-30, 21-30, 30-24, 15-13 in volleyball action Saturday evening at the Black and Gold Challenge hosted on the campus of Wake Forest University.
Senior right side hitter Kristi Lee posted a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs to lead UAB. Freshman outside hitter Nanea Holmes had 16 kills and junior middle blocker Karen Boyd added seven kills, 13 digs and four total blocks for the Blazers. In addition, senior outside hitter/right side hitter Dina Katsoulis, playing in the setter position, also recorded a double-double with 54 assists and 10 digs.
Lee was named to the all-tournament team for UAB after leading the Blazers in kills in all three matches at the tournament. Lee posted one double-double on the weekend and recorded double digits in kills in two of the three matches UAB played. The honor marked the second consecutive for Lee, as she was also named to the all-tournament team at the Ogden Marriott Weber State Classic last weekend.
"Kristi Lee and Nanea Holmes had great performances for us today," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "Kristi had a great overall weekend and Nanea really came through in the clutch for us today. We're just excited to get the win."
Logan Pierce had 17 kills and 12 digs to lead Winthrop. Jennifer Pritchard added 13 kills and five total blocks, while Christie Davis posted 30 assists, 10 digs and nine kills for the Eagles.
UAB next travels to Troy, Ala. Tuesday to face in-state rival Troy State at 7 p.m.
