UAB fell to Tennessee in the first exhibition game of the season, 2-1, in the Alabama Shootout held Friday evening in Huntsville, Ala.
Senior Volunteer Jen Laughridge opened the scoring in the ninth minute when she received a pass from junior Rhian Wilkinson and tapped in the game's first goal.
The score remained that way into the second half when sophomore Tara Kidwell (Leesburg, Va.) scored from 25-yards out to tie the game at 1-1.
With 14 minutes left in the contest, Wilkinson scored the game-winner off a loose rebound to give Tennessee the 2-1 lead.
"We looked sloppy at first, but then we settled down," said head coach Paul Harbin. "We started to play more composed as the game continued."
"This was exactly what we needed in preseason," Harbin said. "We know our weaknesses and know that we can play with a top-20 ranked team. We learned a lot."
The Blazers will face Clemson in their final exhibition of the preseason Sunday, August 25, at 2 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
