MEMPHIS, Tenn. ----- The UAB women's golf team, playing its first tournament under new head coach Kim Wilcox, posted team scores of 309-327 and stands sixth after the first day of the nine-team competition in the 2002 Memphis Women's Intercollegiate here Monday. The event is being played at the Club at Northcreek in Southaven, Miss.
The Blazers enter the final round with a team score of 636. New Orleans is second at 614, while Middle Tennessee State is in third place with a score of 615. Augusta State and William & Mary complete the top five with totals of 617 and 629, respectively.
"I thought we did pretty well," Wilcox said. "Thirty-six holes is a lot of holes to play for some of our freshmen who have never played that many holes walking. I'm encouraged because I don't think the girls will get down on themselves."
Brooke Mangan led the way, shooting a 71-76 for a 147, placing her fourth overall, three strokes behind Memphis' Mariann Rudd. Liz Schweihs and Jenni Elmore are currently in 29th place, shooting a 163 on the day.
The final round is set to begin on Friday, Sept. 17, at 8 a.m.
