BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former Birmingham-Southern All-American Nick Dumas has been named assistant baseball coach at UAB, head coach Larry Giangrosso announced today. Dumas comes to UAB after serving two seasons as an assistant baseball coach at Birmingham-Southern.
"I think Nick is one of the finest young coaches out there today," said Giangrosso. "He came highly recommended by several Division I coaches and he matches up really well with what we need. He has great expertise in the infield and hitting and base running. He's young and very energetic and he is going to fit in well with our coaching staff. He has coached a national championship team, so he understands the things players have to do to reach that level. We are extremely happy to have him here."
While at Birmingham-Southern, Dumas helped guide the Panthers to an NAIA National Championship in 2001. The team also captured the conference regular season and tournament championships in 2001. In 2000, the Panthers won a conference title, the Super Regional Championship and participated in the World Series.
Dumas served as the first base coach, the bunting coach, assisted in all aspects of hitting, assisted in outfield and infield defense preparation, and also assisted in recruiting, scouting reports and field maintenance during his time at Birmingham-Southern.
Dumas was an assistant baseball coach for the Delaware Cows of the Great Lakes League this summer and served as the third base coach and hitting instructor.
Dumas' coaching experience also includes a stint at Mountain Brook High School, where he served as an assistant coach in 2001. At Mountain Brook, Dumas was the first base coach and infield instructor and also compiled scouting reports on opponents. During the summer of 2001, Dumas took on the head coaching responsibilities for the Spartans.
"I'm very excited to be here," said Dumas. "I think this is a great program with a lot of tradition. UAB is in a great conference. Athletics here are on the rise and I think it's a great spot to be in and I'm just really excited to be here."
An accomplished player himself, Dumas was an NAIA All-American for Birmingham-Southern in 1999. He was also a first team all-conference and all-region selection in 1999. Also in 1999, the Panthers placed third at the World Series and brought home regional and conference tournament championships.
Dumas also played professional baseball for Evansville (Indiana) and Chillicothie (Ohio) of the Frontier League.
