BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Second baseman Chad Henry and designated hitter Robby Goodson drove in two runs each and starting pitcher Jeff Lacher held UAB to one run in eight innings as Mississippi State defeated the Blazers 6-1 Tuesday evening at Young Memorial Field.
Lacher (2-2) did not allow a run to score until the bottom of the eighth inning, when UAB designated hitter Joe Yarbrough drove in right fielder Eric Lyon from second base with a single into the right field corner. Lacher faced 34 batters, allowing 10 hits, with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Yarbrough went four-for four in the game with a double and three singles. He also pitched one and 2/3 innings in relief of starter Ross Dobbins, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Mississippi State (29-22-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as left fielder Jon Mungle drew a walk from Dobbins, stole second and scored on an RBI single up the middle by center fielder Casey Long.
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 3-0 in the third on consecutive groundouts by shortstop Matthew Maniscalco and second baseman Chad Henry, and made it 5-0 in the fourth as Goodson and Henry both had RBI singles off Yarbrough.
The final Mississippi State run of the evening came in the top of the eighth as Goodson drove in Mungle with his second RBI single of the game.
UAB's Dobbins (3-5) worked three and 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.
UAB (15-38) closes out the 2002 season later this week, hosting South Florida in a three-game Conference USA series. Game one is set for Thursday at 7:00 pm CDT.
