Baseball Loses A Close One To Southern Miss

- Southern Miss right fielder Clint Stoy went four-for-five with three doubles, including
one that drove in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as the Golden
Eagles rallied to defeat UAB 5-4 in Conference USA baseball action Friday
evening at Young Memorial Field.
With
the score tied 4-4, Golden Eagle catcher Brad
Willcutt led off the top of the ninth with a
single off UAB reliever Cody Cillo. Willcutt advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by
first baseman Jason Lowery, to third
on a passed ball by Blazer catcher Justin
Miller, and scored as the next batter, Stoy,
slapped a Cillo pitch into the right center field gap
to give Southern Miss the lead.
Stoy, who singled
and scored in the fourth inning, doubled and scored in the fifth, and doubled
in each of his last two at-bats.
Southern
Miss (28-15, 12-6 Conference USA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Willcutt drove in third baseman Allen Winningham with a double, one of
five by the Golden Eagles in the game.
UAB
(13-28, 5-14 C-USA) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as Southern Miss
starter Shea Douglas walked two Blazer batters and
paid for it as first baseman Matt Womble drove in one run with a single and right fielder
Eric Lyon drove in a second with a
sacrifice fly.
The
Golden Eagles regained the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring on an RBI
single by shortstop Matt Shepherd
and a sacrifice fly by center fielder Carlos Velasquez.
Southern
Miss added a run in the fifth as Stoy doubled with
one out and scored on an RBI double by second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir.
The
Blazers closed the gap to 4-3 in the seventh as left fielder Mitch Jones led off with a walk, moved
to second on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Mark
Garner and scored on a single by Womble, who had
two RBI in the game.
UAB
tied the game in the eighth as designated hitter Kyle Leon led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt by third baseman Matt Gaulden, and scored on an error by Golden Eagle second
baseman Hoffpauir.
Southern
Miss reliever Cliff
Russum (1-2) worked the final one and 1/3 innings
to get his first victory of the season, allowing no hits or runs.
UAB's Cillo (1-1) worked the ninth inning, allowing one run on
two hits, with no walks or strikeouts.
