Baseball Drops Another Heartbreaker To Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM,
Ala. -- Left fielder Jeff Cook's two-run homer to right
field in the top of the ninth gave Southern Miss the lead and reliever Stephen Castleman slammed the door on
UAB in the bottom half of the inning as
the Golden Eagles defeated UAB 7-6 in Conference USA baseball action Saturday
afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
It was the second-straight ninth-inning victory for the
Golden Eagles (29-15, 13-6 C-
UAB (13-29, 5-15 C-USA) led 6-5 entering the top of the
ninth inning. Reliever Cody Cillo took the mound for his
second inning of the day, seeking his fourth save of the season. Southern Miss third baseman Allen Winningham led off the inning
with a double to right field, and the next batter, Cook, drove a Cillo pitch
just inside the right field foul pole to give the Golden Eagles a 7-6 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, UAB leadoff hitter Eric Lyon drew a walk from Castleman
but was retired at second base on a fielder's choice by left fielder Kyle Leon. Castleman then got UAB third baseman Matt Gaulden to ground into a
double-play, ending the game.
Castleman
(3-2) worked four complete innings in relief of starter Bob McCrory, allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and two
strikeouts. McCrory worked five complete
innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits, with two walks and two
strikeouts.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Friday
night's hero, right fielder Clint Stoy, drove in catcher Brad Willcutt from third with a groundout.
UAB tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI
single by
The Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on second
baseman Jared Hoffpaiur's two-RBI
single, but the Blazers tied the game again with two runs in the bottom of the
fifth on an RBI double by Lyon and a sacrifice fly by Gaulden.
The Blazers took a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth, as
catcher Justin Miller drove in two
runs with a single to left field, and
Southern Miss closed the gap with two runs in the top of the
seventh as Stoy singled with the bases loaded, bringing home center fielder Carlos Velasquez from third and
Cook from second on a throwing error by
Gaulden.
Cillo
(1-2) had a very unpleasant sense of d?j? vu; he was on the mound in the ninth
inning of Friday's game when Stoy drove in the winning run with a double. In Saturday's game, Cillo worked two complete
innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with no walks and three strikeouts,
but got the loss for the second straight day.
UAB freshman Tony
Falls got no decision in his first collegiate start, working six and 1/3
innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, with three walks and three
strikeouts.
UAB and Southern Miss are scheduled to play the third and
final game of their weekend series Sunday at

Southern Miss will send senior right-hander Charlie Rogers (5-1, 5.20 ERA) to the mound.
