Softball Splits with Middle Tennesee

Birmingham, Ala. - UAB (23-12, C-USA 5-4) split this afternoon with Middle Tennessee State (17-16). The Blazers fell in the first game 4-3 in eight innings and won the second 1-0.
MTSU started early scoring three runs in the first inning on three hits, 3-0.
The Blazers fought back in the bottom of the first when junior shortstop Candice Hithe (Daphne, Ala.) scored on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.), 3-1.
UAB added a few more in the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman Kristin Stanfill (Goodlettsville, Tenn.), who ran for Paul, scored on a single up the middle by sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.), 3-2. Senior third baseman Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.) scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.) to tie the game, 3-3.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Lady Raiders added a run off of one hit, 4-3, to win the game.
Senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.) took the lost for UAB throwing all eight innings, allowing four runs off six hits. Stephenson (8-6) recorded three strikeouts on the day.
In game two, the Blazers scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore second baseman Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.) scored on an error by MTSU pitcher, 1-0.
Junior outfielder Cliffanie Engram (Pelham, Ala.) led UAB in game two going 2-3.
The winning pitcher was Kerri Foster (McCalla, Ala.). Foster (9-4) threw a no-hitter for the Blazers working all seven innings.
UAB is up next tomorrow at Alabama A & M for a doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m.
